Heinle ELT, part of Cengage Learning and a leading provider of materials for English language teaching and learning worldwide, today announced the adoption of its Milestones series by the Texas State Board of Education for Middle School English as a Second Language (ESL), Grades 6, 7 and 8.

The Milestones series will be used to help students in Texas master the English Language Proficiency (ELP) Standards, which are the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for ESL. The newly adopted program also prepares ESL students in Texas for mainstream Language Arts and Reading courses and is fully correlated to the Texas English Language Arts and Reading (ELAR) standards.

The Milestones series, developed specifically for English language learners, offers solid language instruction and includes many features to better prepare students for success on standardized exams, including:

• Embedded assessment to help identify problems with skills and standards
• Academic vocabulary instruction, practice and assessment to prepare students for classroom success and state examinations
• Differentiated instruction for each reading selection to provide all students with the tools necessary to meet or exceed grade-level expectations
• Phonics and intervention strategies through the Heinle Phonics and Intervention Kit, which offers extensive support for struggling readers

It helps students to master standards that are essential for meeting the needs of exams such as the Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System (TELPAS) and the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR). Furthermore, it prepares students to be better readers, writers and speakers of the English language, inside and outside of the classroom.
