Shenghuo Huayu aims to enable learners to use simple and structured Chinese sentences and common expressions for daily communication. It is suitable for beginner Chinese language courses at the college level. The target learners are non-native speakers, undergraduate students and adults. The estimated time needed to cover the book is 60 contact hours.

 

The twenty-one lessons in this book covers a wide variety of topics such as greetings, social expressions, date, time and places. Introduction to Chinese phonetics and characters are found in the first 2 lessons. Dictionary skills are covered in Lessons 13 and 14.

 

Each lesson comprises 4 components - (1) short dialogues, (2) new words list, (3) notes on communication and (4) exercises. A good variety of exercises and activities, such as read-aloud, role play, rhymes and character writing, are specially designed to develop the learners\' 4-skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing.

 

Malaysian non-native learners would find the appendices on common Chinese-English terms pertaining to Malaysia most useful, as they cover common names of places, landmarks and food.

 

The dialogues and vocabulary used in this book are provided in an audio CD that comes with the book. This audio CD can be used as a teaching aid and/or as self-learning material.
